The Change of Lifestyle

I worked as a manager in a company for a number of years. I liked my job, and was doing well there, but our company was bought by a larger company and most of the managers at our place lost their jobs. That was when I decided to do something I’d always wanted to do—become a freelance (自由撰稿的) writer. Changing professions has meant that my lifestyle has changed in a number of ways.

The main difference for me now is that I have a much more flexible schedule. I work about as much as I did before—between 45 and 50 hours a week—but my schedule is much less rigid than it used to be. Before, I worked from 8 to 5 every day, with a few extra hours on weekends. Now, however, I work when I feel like it. For instance, sometimes I work until midnight or 2 A.M., then sleep until noon. I really prefer this kind of schedule. It seems more natural to me.

I also decided that it was about time I began o pay more attention to my health. While I was working as a manager, I never exercised. I already felt tired after work, so I just came home in the evening and watched TV. However, last year I joined a health club and began to do regular exercise. As a result I have lost over 10 pounds and I feel much better. I’ve also started to eat more healthfully. I used to eat a lot if fast food, but now I do my own shopping. I buy lots of fruits and vegetables and cook them at home.

Of course, not all the changes have been that easy. For example, I don’t feel as secure financially as I used to. When I was working as a manager, I never worried much about money. I could always count on getting my paycheck every two weeks. Working freelance, I don’t have a regular paycheck. So now I have to make sure there’s enough money until the next check arrives.

All in all, I really like my current lifestyle. Of course, that doesn’t mean I’ll never want to have a “regular” job. But for now, at least, it suits me.

The Advantages of Educating Girls

Educating girls quite possibly yields a higher rate of return than any other investment available in the developing world. Women’s education may be unusual territory for economists, but enhancing women’s contribution to development is actually as much an economic as a social issue. And economics, with its emphasis on incentives (激勵), provides guideposts that point to an explanation for why so many girls are deprived of an education.

Parents in low-income countries fail to invest in their daughters because they do not expect them to make an economic contribution to the family: girls grow up only to marry into somebody else’s family and bear children. Girls are thus seen as less valuable than boys and are kept at home to do housework while their brothers are sent to school-the prophecy (預言) becomes self-fulfilling, trapping women in a vicious circle (惡性循環) of neglect.

An educated mother, on the other hand, has greater earning abilities outside the home and faces an entirely different set of choices. She is likely to have fewer but healthier children and can insist on the development of all her children, ensuring that her daughters are given a fair chance. The education of her daughters then makes it much more likely that the next generation of girls, as well as of boys, will be educated and healthy. The vicious circle is thus transformed into a virtuous circle.

Few will dispute that educating women has great social benefits. But it has enormous economic advantages as well. Most obviously, there is the direct effect of education on the wages of female workers. Wages rise by 10 to 20 per cent for each additional year of schooling. Such big returns are impressive by the standard of other available investments, but they are just the beginning. Educating women also has a significant impact on health practices, including family planning.

D. girls will be increasingly discontented with their life at home

13. The author believes that a vicious circle can turn into a virtuous circle when ________.

A. women care more about education

High Divorce Rate in America

During the traditional wedding ceremony, the bridal couple promise each other lifelong devotion. Yet, about 50% American marriages will end in divorce. What goes wrong? The fact that divorce is so common in the United States does not mean that Americans consider marriage a casual, unimportant relationship. Just the opposite is true. Americans expect a great deal from marriage. They seek physical, emotional, and intellectual compatibility. They want to be deeply loved and understood. It is because Americans expect so much from marriage that so many get divorced. They prefer no marriage at all to a marriage without love and understanding.

Which marriages are most likely to end in divorce? Marriages between people with low incomes or limited education and marriages between teenagers are at greatest risk. The number of divorces between couples with children under the age of 18 is declining, and almost 45% of divorcing couples are childless.

When a couple gets divorced, the court may require the man to pay his former wife a monthly sum of money called alimony (贍養費,生活費). The amount of alimony depends on the husband’s income, the wife’s needs, and the length of the marriage. If the woman is working and earns a good salary, she may receive no alimony at all. Occasionally, the court decides that a woman should pay her husband alimony. About 10% of American women outearn their husbands. If the woman has totally supported her husband during the marriage, the court may decide that she must continue to support him after the divorce. This is a rather new concept in the United States.

If a divorcing couple has children, the court must determine which parent the children will live with and who will provide for their support. In most cases, the children live with the mother, and the father pays child support and has visitation rights. However, it is not uncommon for a father to get full custody or joint custody of his children when this arrangement seems to be in the children’s best interest.

The high risk of divorce doesn’t seem to make Americans afraid to try marriage—again and again. By middle age, about 95% of Americans have been married at least once. About 80% of those who get divorced eventually remarry. Only in Japan is the married proportion of the population as high as it is in the U.S. A. In fact, remarriage and the creation of new families is so common in the United States that one American joke tells of a wife calling to her second husband, “Quick, John! Come here and help me! Your children and my children are beating up our children!”

A. What problems has divorce brought about?

B. Does high divorce rate mean refusal to marry?

C. Are children’s rights well protected?

D. What is the root of high divorce rate in America?

E. Is sex equality apparent in American divorces?

F. What marriages are more likely to break?

What Youngsters Expect in Life

Back in the good old days of stable economic expansion—the 1950s and 1960s—a person could choose to do something new, exciting, and creative in life but could also choose to say, “That’s not for me: I am going to play it safe in life. I am going to stay in my home town and have a nice comfortable career in a salaried job.”__26__. All of us are going to be creators and pioneers over the next 10 years whether we like it or not, and many of us don’t like it.

Just look at what the attitude surveys tell us. In the United States, three-quarters of the adults surveyed by the Harris poll and two-thirds of all high-school seniors surveyed by Scholastic magazine say they believe that the United States will be a worse place 10 years from now than it is today. No wonder young people are disaffected. No wonder they are not motivated to learn. __27__.

Young men, in particular, are not happy with their prospects for the future. When surveyors ask U.S. female high-school students what they are going to do when they graduate, they list all kinds of roles they want to fill, like doctors, lawyers, engineers, accountants, civil servants, police and firemen, and fighter pilots. ___28__ Moreover, less than 10% of female high-school seniors expect to spend their adult lives solely as mothers and domestic managers,___29__.

By comparison, nearly half of male high-school students express their preference for a traditional, male-headed, one provider, nuclear family,___30___. And when male high-school students are asked what kinds of careers they would like to have, the only two job fields that consistently receive large numbers of responses in open surveys are “professional athlete” and “media personality”. A large proportion of America’s young men—one third or more—simply say they don’t know what they’re going to do as adults.

A. In short, they want to do all the things that men have always done.

B. where the wife stays home as mother and housewife

C. That second choice no longer exists for the vast majority of Americans.

D. while nearly 90% are committed to having both a career and a marriage based on equality.

E. where the wife enjoys equality to her husband at home.

F. They think the world in which they are going to spend their lives won’t be a very satisfactory place.

26-30  CFADB

  Marriage Across Nations

Gail and I imagined a quiet wedding. During our two years together we had ___41___ (experience) the usual ups and downs of a couple learning to know, understand, and respect each other. But through it all we had __42____ (honest) confronted the weaknesses and strengths of each other’s characters.
